Roelof Pieters is the CTO and Co-founder of Overstory, a startup providing forest intelligence through state-of-the-art machine learning, satellite imagery, and computing power.
Roelof believes that forests are amazing and that technology can help protect them. Forests sequester carbon and more than 1.6 billion people (and 80% of the world’s plant and animal species) depend on them for food, water, fuel, and medicines.
Before Overstory Roelof ran creativeai where, together with his team, they developed an AI-assisted generative design system to support designers. He is also the founder of Stockholm.ai, and ran various open science initiatives like GitXiv and ethical machines, as well as a data-science consultancy (Graph-Technologies) and a sustainability-focused design studio (Sunshine Lab). Roelof studied Social Anthropology & Development Sociology in Amsterdam, Leiden and Stockholm (Msc) and Computer Science in Amsterdam and Stockholm (Ph.D).
